Father's Day in Jakarta

If you are Australian, you're most likely aware that Father’s Day is just around the corner. You see, in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea this familial occasion is celebrated on the first Sunday in September.

In Catholic Europe, Father’s Day has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph's Day) since the Middle Ages and as a result this date is still used in 13 countries in Europe and the Americas. However, the vast majority of countries that celebrate Father’s Day have adopted the US date of the third Sunday of June.

If Father’s Day is celebrated in September in your household, then today's post is for you. The ajb team have compiled an array of gift ideas for that special Dad (or Grandad or even Great Grandad) in your life.

And why not take Dad out for a delicious breakfast - we share some of our suggestions at the bottom of this post.

So from us here at 'a journey bespoke' blog, we wish every Dad a very happy day on the 4th September.

The Active Dad

Suka Outdoor

A gift for the Active Dad (or maybe a little hint for that Dad who needs to get a bit more active) can be found at Suka Outdoor. Located in the Dharmawagnsa Square in South Jakarta, the friendly staff at Suka Outdoor can help you with your selection. Although Suka's range tends towards Cycling, Running and Triathlon, many accessories for general activity can also be found. Definitely worth a visit!

The Coffee Fiend Dad

Anomali Coffee / Caswells Coffee / Tuku Kopi

How nice would it be for Dad to wake up to a freshly brewed cup of coffee? Well, take it up another level by using Indonesian-grown, locally roasted beans. Our picks are below. Our all time favourite Indonesian coffee? Aceh Gayo from the highlands of North Sumatra. We love the light earthy notes, fully body and smooth aftertaste. Delicious!

Our favourite Indonesian coffee by local roasters including: Caswell's Aceh Gayo (Sumatra), Anomali's Toraja (South Sulawesi) and Tuku Kopi's Aceh Gayo blend

Dad will be able to savour his favourite brew of local coffee in one of these bespoke coffee cups by Ayu Larasati (left & right) and Pekunden Potter (centre)

The Fashion-Forward Dad

If you think buying Dad a pair of socks for Father's Day is unoriginal, you're buying the wrong socks! For the Jakarta Fashion-Forward Dad we suggest a visit to Männer Store and By the Sea. There you will find the perfect pair of socks for your Dad and much more.

Männer stock a range of on-trend clothes for guys as well as footwear and accessories. Enjoy a browse of our edit below; or jump onto their website to check out their brands, or if time is limited how to buy online.

The Golfer Dad

If your Dad loves Golf we've got you covered. Why not mix up your Dad's Saturday routine by heading out to a local golf course; practise some shots at the driving range, or buy Dad some new golf accessories. Pondok Indah is one of many excellent golf courses in Jakarta, and is a good place to start. See contact details below for all fees at Pondok Indah Golf Course and Driving Range.

Playing golf is great fun, but also offers a wide range of health benefits, as well as the enjoyment of being outdoors

Pondok Indah Driving Range is located next door to PIM 3. They advertise 100 balls for RP: 150.000

Located next to the Driving Range is Sportindo Golf. They stock an extensive range of golf clothing and accessories. There is something for every Golf loving Dad here

The Green Thumb Dad

Roadside Plant Nurseries

For the Green Thumb Dad in your life, why not buy a pot plant? This addition of verdant tranquility to Dad's home office will help create a chilled out vibe whilst bringing a bit of nature (and natural air filtration) inside.

For those of you living in Jakarta's South, our favourite roadside nursery is situated opposite Darmawagnsa Hotel on Jalan Dharmawagnsa. Along this strip you will find a good variety of indoor- and outdoor plants including a limited variety of fruit plants (citrus, passionfruit), herbs (rosemary, kemangi) as well as orchids, cacti and other perennials. There are also specialist shops supplying pebbles, potting mix, fertiliser and other gardenware. Our recommendation is Syifa Flora.

Grab a decorative pot or basket (try LinolunaGaleri Pot or Nagarey) and head to your local roadside nursery to find that perfect fit. If the vendor doesn’t have what you're looking for, they will certainly help you locate it as they collaborate with nearby vendors to fulfil your Green Thumb shopping list.

Just add a card and the gift is ready to go

Acep is one of many friendly and amenable vendors on Jl Dharmawagnsa Raya. Work with him to identify all your Green Thumb needs .. and be sure to bargain!

Pak Salim of 'Salim Flora' has two shops along Jl. Dharmawagnsa Raya. His command of English is excellent and he is very eager to assist with any queries you have

Street view of Jl. Dharmawagnsa Raya - Have fun selecting that perfect plant for Dad and work hard to get the right price (Our advice: Half the vendor's initial price and gradually increase if necessary)

The Reader Dad

No matter what your Dad's interests, you can send him a big ‘I love you’ shout out by setting him up with some good reading material. Books, Magazines and Newspaper subscriptions are all perfect gift ideas for the Dad who loves to read.
Aksara, Periplus and Kinokuniya are all excellent bookshops located across Jakarta. (see below for stockists) If you are running short of time before Father's Day, Periplus has an extensive online bookstore. Below are our Reader Dad gift suggestions.

Two excellent reads for the Dad who is interested in Indonesian history. Jakarta Jive Bali Blues illuminates the traditions, customs and beliefs that govern the behaviour of Indonesian communities after the collapse of the Soeharto government. Krakatoa tells the frightening tale of the biggest volcanic eruption in history

Maybe your Dad doesn't have a lot of time read books, that's Ok! Set Dad up with a stash of magazines covering his interests. For the Dad who's into Architecture, Global Issues, Business, Culture and Design we recommend Archinesia and Monocle Magazine. Sourced in Aksara and Periplus

Why not buy Dad a subscription to his favourite newspaper and have it delivered straight to his door each morning! See below for details
